For Speedlites and Strobes

Do you shoot with both types of off-camera flash? Thanks to the Apollo and Halo’s versatile umbrella shaft, these modifiers can be instantly paired with both speedlites and strobes. With these softboxes, you won’t be confined to using a single lighting style or forced into buying various modifiers.

Say Goodbye to Speedrings and Rods

Unlike most softboxes, these modifiers are constructed with an umbrella-style frame. Not only does this allow for the instant assembly, but it also allows for quick strobe mounting without bulky speedrings or adapters.

Equipped with the Latest Technology

Since their introduction in 1985, these umbrella-style softboxes have been enhanced based upon consumer requests. The latest Apollo design features a recessed edge, flexible fiberglass frame, and removable outer diffusion panel.

Premium Diffusion Fabric

Our diffusion panels are constructed with a premium, all-natural unbleached nylon fabric. Unlike processed diffusion fabrics, these diffusers will soften your light source without altering its color temperature.

Direct and Soften Light

By directing your light source toward the Apollo’s included diffusion front, you’ll create drastic highlights with a subtle hot spot. By directing your unit towards the back of Apollo, you’ll create an even spread of light with softer shadows. You can even pick up an optional 40-degree Egg Crate Grid for more light control options.

Maximize Output

Apollo softboxes are manufactured with a highly-reflective silver interior for optimized light output.

Uncompromising Light Control

Grids are made up of cells that control off-axis light in 4 directions while still maintaining the soft quality you want from a large light source. By focusing light through a grid, you eliminate both light spill and lens flare simultaneously for precise illumination.

The Hair Light Perfected

By allowing you to perfectly focus your light source on a defined area, grids are the essential accessory for your hair light or rim light. When modified with a grid and softbox, your light can illuminate your subject from behind without light spilling onto your backdrop to gain stunning dimension and depth in your portraiture.

The Science Behind 40-Degree

A 40-degree grid is the most popular choice for photographers and filmmakers, allowing for precise light control with limited loss of light. Light loss at the center axis is minimal, even at a distance 3 to 4 times the diagonal of the softbox. This typically results in losing less than 1/4-stop.

Instant Placement

Our 40-degree Grids easily attach to the front of your softbox with ultra-durable Velcro™ material Apollo softboxes are designed with a recessed edge, giving you the ability to use your diffusion panel and 40-degree grid simultaneously.

  1. Great choice, great light review by David In Vancouver on 2/19/2017

I bought 2 of these on sale, as part of a package with the grids to go with them. For that price ($100 USD) these softboxes absolutely can't be beat by anything out there. I don't think I've ever seen a strip box with grid in that price range, even from the knock-offs, and Westcott is far from a knock-off brand. The light coming out of them is everything you'd expect from a strip box, with or without the grids. Be aware, though, of the measurements, I'm not sure if these are best called "strip boxes" or "rectangular softboxes". They aren't particularly narrow, which, depending on what you want, may be good or bad for your needs. Just consider these aren't 6 inches wide.

The setup is a breeze. Exactly like opening an umbrella. Even though I knew this, it was still a pleasant surprise the first time I did it. One design quirk I found (that I sent off as a support ticket as well) was the velcro for the diffusion panel and the grid is a touch awkward. There is one large strip inside in the box that holds both. The problem is that to mount the diffusion panel, you have to set it fairly far back into the velcro, which is fine except for the way it catches the front of the velcro strip that has to hold the grid. It might be more convenient if the velcro was reversed for the panel and the grid.

I also highly recommend the Westcott umbrella brackets to go with these boxes. I had some of my own, but their design placed the speedlight very high up in the box. The Westcott ones keep the light about an inch lower than the ones I had already. Just something to think about.

All in all, great products at a great price, especially with the sale on. Bought 2 Orbs to go with my new strip lights because (especially for the price) you can't beat the quality and reliability.

Umbrella Softboxes product review by Erik Valind, Top Pro Photographer

“The Apollo really is an awesome modifier and a staple in my lighting kit, both for speedlights and bigger strobes. The biggest advantage is its portability. I shoot mainly on location and to be able to produce this quality of light from such a small package is wonderful. They produce a very soft and even light that I hadn’t seen before when using speedlights. That coupled with the added control of a softbox and the recessed front does wonders for eliminating spilled light allowing you to only light what you want. ”

“In the field and in the studio, I love working with the Westcott Apollo. I pop my speedlite into the Apollo, and immediately have wireless softbox strobe capability. How cool is that! ”

Umbrella Softboxes product review by Sarah Nickerson, Canada Photo Convention Blog

“We have used our fair share of cheap and flimsy light modifiers, but the Apollo felt strong and durable while still remaining lightweight. The frame is very sturdy and the soft box material is thick and of great quality.”

Umbrella Softboxes product review by Sid Ceasar, Sid Ceasar Photography

“I use them on a majority of my shoots because I like the quality, control and ease of setup with them. I cherish them because they work with both my studio strobes as well as all my speedlights for my location work. And I absolutely LOVE them because unlike traditional softboxes that require speedrings, the Apollo opens and closes just like an umbrella.”

“I can put one, or three speedlights in here to work indoors or outside. I love how it folds like an umbrella and travels with my light-stands perfectly.”
